US Steel closes Fairfield blast furnace-The 17th China(Guangzhou)Int'l Stainless Steel Industry Exhibition

WIAT reported that US Steel is closing its blast furnace in Fairfield on Tuesday, leaving more than 1,000 people out of work. The manager of US Steel out of Pittsburgh told WIAT they plan on taking down the facility in an orderly manner, meaning that the layoffs start today but could continue in the coming days as well.
This is something that has been in the works for several months. After being idled twice this year, the permanent closing is now in effect.
The tubular operations and the electric furnace construction project will not be affected.
The corporate office said that employees being laid off will have the chance to transfer to a different facility. They have 13 plants nationwide.
